Please could somebody advise me.

I have the MacPro 2,1 3ghz quad core with an ATI radeon x1900.

My monitor (24 apple cinema) swaps from working to not working randomly..as in weekly or daily. This morning I discovered that the monitor will only go on IF BOTH EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVES are plugged in and on. Very odd!!! PLUS my wacom tablet at times will not work!

What I need to know is: is this is a motherboard problem or a graphics card problem.

I am, however, planning to upgrade my graphics card so please advise. I have tried a new card but it was incompatible so I am not sure what will work with this machine. I work with large psd graphics (as in 1GB+ as every year I design a bus and do a lot of exhibition stands) and a bit of video but not much.

Thanks

Well try replacing things and see if it fixes it. The graphics card may be under apples recall. Also it could be the mini display adaptor you are using since you say you have a 24" and a 1900XT.

The 5770 and 5870 should be fine in your system.

oh my goodness.. by the time i replace everything, I may as well have bought a new system. Thanks anyhow.

Can you advise on the best graphics card for my system? nvidia or ati and which model?

If I'm not mistaken, Apple's support for faulty X1900 cards runs out this month!

So hurry up and call Apple asap to get the card replaced!
