Hello together,

i bought a XFX AMD Radeon HD7870 for my Windows PC. And I know there are special cards for MacPro but I wan't to figure out if there is any possible way to work with this card as well on my mac. I don't want to buy a new one just for my mac because this was a good one.
The purpose is, to install Boot Camp and use Windows as well on my MacPro.

The hardware facts are:
OSX Lion 10.8.2
2x SSD 120GB Raid0 for OSX
20 GB Memory
2x QuadCore

Thank you very much in advance for any advice or help!

cheers,
b0mb4

I dont believe there are native drivers in 10.8.2 for that card, although I have heard rumours they may be coming in 10.8.3, but for now its not supported.

Goodluck with your choise mate!

Thanks guys for the hints!
But my biggest question is, where have you heard that rumour about the driver support from ati cards?
is there really no driver to install in osx?

^^^Search the forum, there are few threads about 10.8.3 beta and 7xxx series. Check netkas forum as well.

Why rely on (mac)rumors :) when there are options that have been proven to work in your mac pro! Overall Nvidia has better performance and driver support in both OS X and Windows 7/8, in PC or in BootCamp setup!

As you might have seen the current mac pro line-up are no longer avaliable in the online store, so perhaps wait for the new mac pro and see which graphics cards will be choosen by Apple for it!

Goodluck and cheers!

Because not everyone wants an nVidia card..GREAT, PERFECT or not. For example ATI provides better driver support in Linux, mabe he's coming from that world and would like to reward a company that "supports" open source. It's all about choice.

Remember this?

what do you mean with "why rely on rumours when there are options that have been proven to work on your mac pro" ?
is there a possiblity? i've seen you are working with a nvidia card, so is that the proven solution? :)

Setup in a mac pro 3.1 with ATI-2600HD MAC & EVGA GTX 670 FTW works great too! Best of both worlds? ;)

I mentioned it as a proven OPTION, not solution!

Are you guys working with a "normal" GPU?
Are you working/gaming with GPU's just for mac? no possiblity for me to use my xfx card?

i am not very happy :(

10.8.3 supposedly supports the 7870..

If this makes you angry I suspect that the Mac world will be frustrating to you as a whole.

my native card is the GT8800, but it is 4 years old and the new that i've bought for my pc is a few weeks old and with a very good perfomance

Thats GREAT!!!!!!!

See my post on my setup with dual Nvidia cards in mac pro 3.1, so toss the AMD for a EVGA and you on-the-go!!!!!!!

thats quite funny, just to use this for bootscreen management ;)

i am a fan of simple working things, but this is insane.
i can't use my video card for mac and windows at the same time because of no support from apple :D

hopefully will the support work in 10.8.3.

is there anywhere a support matrix from apple where the supported cards are listed? i haven't found anything good yet.

to your question, no because there have been no mac since a few weeks.
and the card is and was for my pc, but why not to combine?
the mac got much more power than my pc now!

So why not try to combine the two cards in your Mac? Buy 2 Y-split power cables and power them crossed fro load balance and see if it works in 10.8.2! If not just toss the AMD for a NVIDIA gtx 6xx series or a AMD supported card in OSX!

sounds like a deal! i'll give an update when i'm done with it :)

Hoping the Nvidia 6800 is good enough. I can handle no boot screen using a standard pc card.
