Hello i wanted to improve my MacPro 5.1 (mid 2010) so i changed my old HD 5770 1GB with an GTX 980Ti but i dont see improvements :(
i wanted to get older GFX because of support in program so i choose 980Ti, and now i see sometimes desktop glitches (part where i clock upper right corner seems to blackedout and refresh in second) and it seems to be slower dont know
i have NVIDIA webdrivers latest update
and Cinebench R15 result also look weird

same thing in LightWave rendering (2019 ver)

What brand is your 980 card? (EVGA, Asus?) What PCI-e slot is your 980 using? Are you running it alone or together with the 5770?

You should add some specs for us to check in your signature. Nobody has any idea what RAM is in your computer, HDD specs, what PCI cards are installed. It helps with diagnosis....

it is Asus Strix 980Ti 6GB ver
it is in 1st slot (where original 5770 was)
alone put this is one instead of 5770, dont have enough powerjack to power both at the same time (this Asus is connected with 2x8pin power supply)
i have 32gb ram in all slots in the lower part (4X8GB)
bootable hdf is SSD and have original 1TB on last hdd bay
in last pcie slot (near superdrive) i have an m. 2 adapter with nvm wd black 500gb hdd for project abd scratch drive
so out of 4 pciE 1 and 4 occupied 2 in the middle free for now (bought an usb3 adapter but didnt installed it yet)
hope this helps out, if anything from systeminfo can help i can do a screenshot

Graphical glitches could be due to Apple’s non commitment to Nvidia.

General performance probably will not be noticed, but in Lightwave you can now handle much bigger/more image maps, and should be able to manipulate much denser models.

What are you trying to accomplish specifically? I just see a couple of benchmarks (unless Lightwave wasn’t just benchmarking), but it would help to know which apps you’re trying to improve and how you’re testing them. Also, some parts of some apps will be helped by a faster GPU, while other parts will be CPU-dependent. For example, rendering in FCPX can often be accelerated by GPU, whereas exporting is usually processor-bound.

Your Cinebench R15 result is normal.

That test is well known unable to test the GPU, but only CPU single thread performance and driver efficiency.

If you upgrade the CPU to X5690, you will see a significant improvement in the Cinebench R15 GPU test (I really mean GPU but not CPU here).

Since AMD driver has lower overhead in macOS. Almost any low end AMD card can kill your 980Ti in this particular test. Simply because same CPU single thread performance, but has better driver efficiency.

I have no experience about LightWave, can't help. But it seems you aren't using the GPU as well.

If you ever use X-Plane 11 ( flight simulator - Demo available ) you would really see a huge difference between your HD 5770 and the 980Ti

EDIT

Do you have any video games that you have run using the HD 5770 ? if so try one with the 980Ti

If you're able to return the 980Ti I really would. Spend the money on a Sapphire RX580 Pulse as recommended by Apple themselves. A 980Ti also limits you to pre-Mojave as there are no drivers for it in Mojave or later (we're a few weeks away from finding out if the upcoming macOS will support our 5,1).
And yes, as @h9826790 said, upgrade the CPUs.

Which old program did you get the 980Ti for specifically?

i planed to work in FCPX (video editing) , Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightwave (raytrace rendering)
so RX580 would doo much better work and get better results
[doublepost=1558990718][/doublepost]would 4GB be enough
Sapphire RX 580 Pulse DUAL 4GB

well i started looking for new gpu, first thing i've checked wa the blackmagic desing (which is sold on Apple site also) eGpu ;) and i saw that inside it is Saphire Pulse 8GB and dont know what forced me to buy nVidia :(
well gotta see now and try to change the card, i found one Asus ROG Strix RX580 T8G GAMING we change the cards ... dont know will the installation goes without an problem because it is not a Saphire card ... will wait for a little more and see if i manage to sell this and buy Saphire, if not then change it for this Asus also
Thank you very much, and BTW i like this C= ;) floppy image :) i had one long time ago (floppy) :) back in 1992 :) and 300bps modem without error corretions :) that was adventure
[doublepost=1559033845][/doublepost]doesn't LW 2019 uses the extra power from newer GPUs ? i thought this last (2019) release solve that problem from the old ancient LW version that was out there for long time ago. I think they fixed that in new 2019

The gpu won’t help in Lightwave rendering, unless your using octane.

i dont have games, i am not into gaming ;) i think i tried thoose demos , on new card but not on old one to compare the results ... i am trying only to squeeze more speed in video editing and rendering from this Mac of mine without buying expensive equipment
thank you if i manage time to open put old card back do some test put this back test again i will post the result just for reference and othe people that might want to know

Does this CPU upgrade to X5690 is raw core power ? (difference in clock) or this CPU have some extra built in instruction set for better decoding/encoding video/audio ... ???

No, LW has never used the gpu for native rendering (LW user myself), except if your using a third party renderer like octane, which needs cuda.

So rendering with Mac Pro with hd 5770 and rx580 is the same, only thing what matters is RAW CPU

I suspect that the HD 5770 1gb is gonna be a quite a bit slower that an RX 580 4gb / 8gb in most or many operations and is definitely not " metal supported ".

as far as Mojave goes , it would be safe to say that the HD 5770 is pretty well obsolete but still valid up to Sierra and barely with Hi Sierra.

That is correct, LW is purely a CPU renderer (unless using a cuda plugin renderer with a cuda gpu).

Before getting rid of the nvidia card, it may be worth checking out the demo of octane, but this would entail additional cost to purchase and the steepish learning curve. Also means your stuck on HS.

AMD cards are better for FCPX (from what I hear).

All depends on your work balance between FCPX and LW.

well investing the money in both *the cpu ugrade and GFX :( is not possible at this moment, i'm not doing some commercial things and earning money from it so i cant invest much in my MacPro now
So i am having struggle now within next

- cpu upgrade
- new saphire rx580 8gb
- used vega 56 8gb

i gues for LW only, as read from posts above, the cpu would doo everything, for PCPX, PS, AI it is the GPU ... so i guess now i'm strugling between 2 and 3 ;) , 3 (vega) will cost me more gotta get one from states plus used one dunno know if it was used for mining but still cant be that bad, and 2nd one (rx580) can get new one cheaper then this used one and for he perfomance i am looking out to i think it might be a best solution

The RX580 is the most solid, when considering compatibilty.
This is recommended by Apple, and does work great.

Would not recommend Vega.
Drivers just aren’t at the same level of RX580.

Here are test result

for the 980Ti 6GB
[doublepost=1559560249][/doublepost]and here are the ones with RX580 8GB Saphire Pulse
[doublepost=1559560550][/doublepost]Only thing now left is to check how it behaves in FCPX and AI and PS :) and to see if there will be glitches and stuckdown in rendering the output to monitor with AMD now ...

I'd upgrade to Mojave for the better RX580 drivers and a better experience overall.
