I updated my 5,1 from Mojave to Catalina a couple of years ago. Now I want to go to Big Sur. I need to be able to update software.

I'm trying to use the Clover Configurator workflow but am having trouble.

I've confirmed my Boot ROM is 144.0.0.0.0. I am unable to launch in Recovery Mode. I've tried everything other then a reinstalling Mojave. I can see the recovery volume on my system drive. I disabled the SIP and when I enter csrutil status from terminal the status reads: unknown (custom configuration) though each individual configuration is listed as disabled.

I went ahead and launched the Clover Configurator. Everything seemed to go fine until I blessed it where I got ther error message Run AppleScript" encountered an error: "Can't statfs /Volumes/EFI/EFI/OC/OpenCore.efi"

I turned off Clover Configurator and Catalina seems to still be running OK. Sure would like to get to Big Sur though.

Any thoughts appreciated.

im assuming since you did the catalina upgrade 2 years ago that you used either dosdude or oclp. i suggest you remove the catalina drive for now. install mojave on a new ssd, add martin lo opencore to the mojave drive and upgrade that drive to big sur.

Okay I tried the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. IT definitely works but I'm stuck with having to use a USB drive to startup. The directions for bypassing the USB don't work correctly. Maybe I'll try installing Mojave on a new ssd as you suggested. But that won't bring my current data along which is considerable.
FYI thanks to each of you for your help. Very appreciated.

That's rude. I posted trying to help, the OP never mentioned OCLP.
Precisely -- he never mentioned OCLP in his OP, yet here you came in recommending it.

In case you may not be aware, OCLP and OC are not the same thing. People (and perhaps yourself) often confuse the two.

Back to the OP, he was clearly trying to set up OpenCore (not OCLP), but was having some difficulties with that.

So your recommendation of OCLP would have just caused more undue confusion (I see this all the time within the OpenCore thread).

In any case, it sounds like he's all set now...

Why don't you just follow the instructions I linked above, and setup the Lo Package?

It is so easy to set up (he even has YT videos on it), especially if you want to use Clover to bless, and it works very well.

OCLP is just a GUI to install and configure a machine specific plist for OpenCore. It is the easiest and best way for beginners, because you don’t have to touch a single code line or plist option manually. I don’t see why you wouldn’t recommend it, even advice against it.

To bypass USB booting you have to install OpenCore within OCLP exactly like you did for your USB drive, but selecting the boot drive instead (the one with the fresh Big Sur install).

Here you select your INTERNAL boot drive: A81C126C-9CC7-4A12-8D20-D483356D9A75.png

And here your EFI partition on your internal boot drive:

Obviously your drive names and sizes will be different from the screenshots above.

See what mikiotty wrote above. I have nothing else to add.

You seem to be the one that is a bit confused here:
  • A tool for booting stuff: OpenCore
  • A tool for setting OpenCore up: OCLP
They are obviously not the same thing but the difference is not in the way you imply as you seem to think the OCLP does something similar to what OpenCore does.

I got to this and it stopped me. The warning that the system drive needs to be either FAT32 or GUID/GPT stopped me. I didn't get the message that APFS formats were GUID formats. Looks like I'm good to go. Thanks for your help.

OK I think I've finally got it right. But not sure how I got there. I followed the directions downloading and installing the legacy patcher 5-6 times at least. After rebooting by selecting the USB and pointing it towards the system drive over and over again it finally took. The weird pat is I did everything the same each time. But now I'm booting in Big Sur without a USB device. Have no idea if everything works or not. Wondering if my OS supported RAID will work? Time will tell. Thanks all!

Well everything's been going really well... just one thing that I don't understand. When I'm on the internet sometimes the writing is changed into a different language/code/???. Not sure what's happening but it's consistent. What is happening and is there a fix? Again, thanks!
