MacPro 5.1 & Samsung SM951 PCIe External?

Hey Folks!

I hope someone can help. I recently picked up a MacPro 5.1 and i am doing some upgrades

One of the first things i did was install the Samsung SM951 PCIe storage into a Lycom DT-120 and popped it into one of my PCIe slots inside. Booting, installing and running OSX has been just fine (and blazingly quick!).

However, the drive shows in OSx as an External device and i can't use bootcamp or anything else along those lines. Has anyone else come across something similar or know of a fix / resolution?

Yep it is normal that the Samsung SM951 appears as an orange external drive. I am using a Lyncom DT-120 with an older Samsung XP941 SSD and also shows as an external drive in Mountain Lion. But in Snow Leopard, the Samsung XP941 appears as an internal silver icon HD. I have not tried Bootcamp on the SSD and could not comment.

Did you try installing windows directly from a DVD or USB drive ? I've never used the Boot Camp app to install Windows as it doesn't offer a great deal of options. To install Boot Camp on the boot drive I first create a partition on it with Disk Utility (good luck if you're on 10.11) then use the Windows installer to delete and reformat it as an NTFS partition. I can't be sure it will work for you as I've never done it on an external or PCIe drive.

Just be sure to have a backup in case you make a mistake or something bad happens.

Also waiting for the SM251 (256GB) + DT-120 combination atm, we'll see.

In theory there should be chips to convert x8 PCIe 2.0 into basic x4 PCIe 3.0 allowing full speed operation on an adapter (from PLX or Intel most likely) but that won't be cheap or easily available.
