Hello,

I'm hoping to get some feedback on an issue I've been having with my Mac Pro (Late 2013); it's running Catalina 10.15.7. It has been connected to a Dell monitor via the TB2 port with no issues for some time now. However, is the last day it started to display some artifacts on screen and then began flickering to black. When I restarted the machine I could not get any video signal at all. I then plugged the monitor in via the HDMI port and got an image. However, it seems like the refresh rate is much worse, as the mouse seems sluggish as I move it on screen.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Is my GPU failing? And is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks so much for your help!

Edit: wanted to add that this machine has the D500 3GB graphics. Not sure if this makes a difference. I saw that Apple had recalled/replaced some graphics cards; would this one be part of those affected? How would I check that?

What you’re describing sounds very much like what happens on these machines when the GPU is failing. You should try a different cable and a different port to be sure.

It sounds like one of the graphics boards failed. I believe the HDMI port is connected to the other one. It lags because it only supports 30 hz refresh over HDMI.

Ah, not great news then. Guess it's time to look for a new computer...
