What is everyones opinion.

Apple basically got rid of the 4 core replaced with 6 core version of 2013 specs.

AND said will be obsolete in 1 year.

Any takers on base model?

Well, it's a better value than it was before, but it's still a ~4 year old computer at this point. I wouldn't mind parking one on my desk, but I won't be buying one (and I can afford just about any computer).

This is just inventory clearance and factory maintenance until they can start making something new. You are better off with a MBP for now for most tasks.

Wait till retailers like BH drop it to ~2799, or when apple drops the refurb prices. It's fine as a general purpose workstation. The 6-core Xeon has a great balance of single core performance (3.5ghz) and multi-core count. The GPU's are not really cutting edge anymore but at least there's 2 of them inside.

I wonder if these new cheaper SKU's that were announced today have anything inside updated like the EFI / driver, fan speed algorithms, etc.

Only if purchased w/ the $200 D700 option.

Better off w/ the 8-core D700 model and buy Apple Care
Adding two eGPU based Vega cards will make it screaming fast

I suspect we won't see the 7.1 mMP shipping until 2019
Then most may want to wait another 6-12 months for the bugs in the logic board revisions to be worked out

So... Basically the time to buy the mMP won't be until 2020

I suspect you are right. It's unfortunate they waited so long to proceed. It may never happen.

They said the 4 core or the 6 Core will be obsolete next year? Does that mean they won't get updates anymore?

By considering Apple announce early about the 6,1's replacement + admit it's failed product + price just drop. It's highly likely no update will give to the 6,1 anymore. I personally consider that their announcement basically means the 6,1 is dead, and they are now spend all the resource on developing the 7,1.

You mean hardware updates or software?
