No I'm not implying that I know when the new MacPro will come out. My "end of the tunnel" will be when I hopefully get my replacement Mac Pro this week. I bought a 2009 Mac Pro new almost 2.5 years ago and there have been little issues from day one and growing. The latest has consumed the last 5 weeks ( except for a three day break when I brought it home only to find the larger issues not resolved, then back to them) The local Apple store has had it now for three weeks, this current visit and several days ago the decision was made , by them, to replace it. The people there have been great and I am appreciative of their and Apple's decision. Problems included issues with hard drives, optical drives and operating system software. Yes, I'm frustrated with not having my main computer for so long, but the good news is many faceted. First, I had my Mac Book Pro to partially fill in. Second, I have learned lots about what my Ipad can do, and third I'm getting a NEW ( not re-furbished) Mac Pro and better than the one I had, so the wait has been rewarded.

Perhaps being redundant, but I can not say enough good things about the techs at the local Apple Store or the much appreciated attitude of Apple to replace my machine. Interestingly, is that the Apple data base shows very few problems with the 2009 Mac Pro, mine was just "one that slipped through". So very soon i will be back to enjoying the power and flexibility of the Mac Pro and for hopefully many trouble free years of service.

Oh, the question people will ask is, "will you be upset if they announce an upgrade shortly after you get your new machine.?" The answer is no, as technology moves on and what I have services my needs and desires.

What sort of problems were you experiencing with the hard drives, optical drives, and operating system?

The system would not properly do "Permissions repair on HD 1, the drive with the operating system and all aps and files. It would sometimes not even read the drive. HD2 which I used for time machine back up developed some bad sectors and would not accept a back up plus some other mechanical issues. The Optical drive 1 (upper) would run at every boot as if the system was trying to boot from it. The only way I could stop it from spinning was to shut the system down and reboot. Other times for no reason the same opticla drive would open its door without a command. At least once I could not open it with the eject button and had to shut the system down to get the DVD out. Several times I could not get it to burn to this optical drive. This is the short form as there were also some software issues with the core files of the operating system that randomly cropped up. I will say again although frustrated with the many weeks of lost time I am impressed with the attitude and tenacity of the techs at my local Apple store and the support of management in getting the unit replaced. I will say that all components including memory strips are Apple products not aftermarket so there was no warranty issue. YES, APPLE CARE is worth the price. Not eagerly awaiting my new machine.

Sorry to hear that. I'm glad that AppleCare worked out for you, hopefully you won't have any of these technical problems in the future, it sounds like you really did get a lemon .

I wouldn't reward them by buying a new machine for these issues. 2.5 years is not long at all to keep a computer especially a mac pro. Try using a linux disk to repair permissions.

Edit: Oh it looks like their replacing yours and your not paying. Thats good.

lol. Apple is pretty good about that. You pay a premium but they DO stand behind their products. Everybody deals with lemons from time to time. My recommendation is to get the pro apple care plan, they will get you into a new computer that day no waiting.

This sounds highly unusual. The Mac Pros I've used have been solid.

I'd chalk it up to a lemon and enjoy your new Mac Pro. :)

I am chalking it up to this specific Mac Pro having unsolvable issues. The Mac Pro as a model is solid. Issue now is the delay in getting one built. They ordered Monday hoping it would be here today for them to check out and install my aps and specific files/ data. Did not get to the store. Hopefully next week. We are almost a 6 weeks for this visit. As an aside the ipad is great and has been a lifesaver BUT it is not a Mac Pro or even a true laptop.

Glad to hear they took care of it. Now if I could figure out why my 2009 MP lost the ability to sleep after my clean install of Lion...

Same boat here! Yet W7 sleeps just fine in Bootcamp. I've temporarily "solved" the problem with PleaseSleep.

Exactly why I bought AppleCare. Why take a chance for a lousy $150 or so? It makes not sense. Fortunately the only problems I've had are with my OWC RAM so I haven't spent any Apple money yet.

Another week gone by and still waiting on the replacement Mac Pro to arrive at the Apple Store. Not a happy camper

Thought I would give everyone an update. The local dealer convinced Apple to replace my Mac Pro. Apple was kind enough to do it and add some very nice upgrades. I got the new Mac Pro about ten days ago and it is fast and I was pleased.... short lived. Today I took the new unit back to the local ( as in over 50 miles away, Texas is a big state) for several issues that upon their initial inspection may be due to a defective power supply. Hope to see it perhaps late next week. Again the people at the local Apple retail store are great and very supportive and I do appreciate Apple replacing the defective unit but it boils down to I have had very very limited use of my Mac Pro since early Feb. and that was not the first time it was in. I would get an I Mac in a heartbeat if it had a matte screen. My wife's Imac has never missed a beat nor has either of our MacBook Pros or the MBPs I bought for our adult children. Must be Friday the 13th. Wish me luck
