Ive been waiting for almost a year to get a Mac. My 1Ghz Athlon seems like a tortoise and im fed up. As i was 100% sure of making the MPro order a friend came and begun telling me about the possible problems that always the first revs have. Honestly this really put me into thoughts. Heck what kinda of probs could it have? Did the first G5s have probs?
Ill kill my friend for putting me into these thoughts!

So far there haven't been any reports of problems with the Mac Pro.

Kill your friend and you'll have a handy disposal method - the Mac Pro box is big, not big enough to fit him in there whole, you'll have to chop him up first.

Yeah but there havent been any problems that are noteworthy. There is an issue with SATA perfomance in Windows. There is a work around for it though. I think that is it a this point.

There isnt really much they can mess up in a desktop. Which is why the iMac probably hasnt had any issues either.

It's a top machine, if I were in the situation to be able to consider it I'd be camping out on the steps of my local Apple Centre right now.

Remember to lay down some plastic before inviting your friend over, makes cleanup so much easier.

There are just as many things that could go wrong.

The iMac has more room to work with and has better cooling. Less problems arise from heat or miniturisation. It's always been easier to make a good desktop than a good laptop.

My friend has a mac pro and he loves it. Although it would be overkill for my needs. I'd love an iMac but after problems with my macbook (RSS and being fixed) and macbook pro (whine and returned) i'm thinking i might buy a windows pc again. For the price of an iMac i can get a nice powerful PC, sans osx of course, with a reserator for quiet cooling. Stick the case (antec NSK1300) into the cupboard under my monitor and i won't hear a peep out of it.

Powerful quiet computing, quieter than the iMac i'd say.

As far as the mac pro buying goes, go for it, there aren't any major problems! The 17 inch Macbook Pro is a Rev 1 product and has hardly any problems!

That SATA problem in Windows will probably be remedied at some stage with another Boot Camp driver update or it's proper release with Leopard. Not too big a deal right now, I don't imagine people who make their living with Windows will be snapping up Macs just yet.

The Mac Pro, by all accounts, has had plenty of input from Intel (motherboard, etc). Personally, I don't think that there will be that many issues. It's easier to get a desktop computer right than a laptop one - there are manhy more variables to consider when designing a laptop - space, size, etc, etc.

Perhaps your friend is just jealous that you can get a Mac Pro whereas he can't.

The only problem I experienced was that migration assistant didn't work.

Considering REV A that is nothing. This is one of the best REV A's ever. Buy the damn thing. It's awesome.

I mean, there isnt much Apple can do to mess up a desktop. Due to their larger design.

Of course things can go wrong, that is not what I am referring to. I am just saying there isnt much a company can do to mess up a desktop.

Which is why the iMac and now the Mac Pro have less problems, as opposed to the notebook line. Heck even the mini is good to go.

well, the Mac Pro is troublefree as expected and the SATA thing is not a flaw, its just the result of not having a floppy on the mac pro.

Are you crazy? I have a very quiet keyboard and I can't hear my iMac under my typing.
Plus, you get osx.

Right! While the Mac Pro is not a loud machine, it is much louder then the imac!

Considering they're about the same price, I never got why people purchased imacs, macbook pro all the way!

iMac is faster than the Macbook pro. Faster graphics (slightly), more graphics memory for the same price (base 15" MBP vs 20" iMac with graphics update) , bigger and faster hard drive, bigger screen, oh and no whine

Plus some people prefer desktops over laptops.

Graphics card is the same but is clocked slower in the 15" MBP than the 20" iMac. Thus it is slower. This has been widely documented. Plus the 2000 euro MBP only has 128MB non upgradable graphics memory.

Not everyone wants a laptop. For a desktop system they don't work well unless you get an extra keyboard and mouse, which come free with the iMac. The screen is set far back from you if you use the laptop screen in a desktop setting with external keyboard, if you use external monitor thats extra money. Plus you get a bigger higher resolution screen with the iMac, 20" 1680x1050 VS 15" 1440x900.

Oh and not to mention the iMac has a dual layer DVD drive.

Yup it can, although with the 1000 odd euro someone saves by buying a 20" iMac you could buy a lot of lunchs. Or you could buy a nice MacBook for your self and have a laptop that's much more portable. Last time i checked the Macbook is only .33GHZ slower than the MBP 17".

There have been reports of Mac Pro problems but VERY FEW ther were like 2 reports of it dying. Some loud fan noise which is easily fixable. And the SATA driver thing but there is a workaround for that which is fairly simple.

Last time i checked the Macbook is only .33GHZ slower than the MBP 17".

That .33 makes all the difference. What would you rather have, a 3 ghz comp or a 2.77?
