MacPro crashes after 10.8.3

Post the 10.8.3 upgrade, experiencing system lockups on startup.

If I'm able to make it past the login screen, anything graphic intensive will freeze the system. First noticed with using Youtube. Crashes using either Chrome, Safari or Firefox.

Restarting into Safe mode (the only way I'm able to post this message) seems to bring back the system. Console shows odd logs about starting a GPU diagnostic and just line after line of kernel messages.

Have completely pulled all the hardware out of the box, cleaned and blown out memory boards, video card, drives

Have run the Apple Hardware test with no errors
Have run Rember to test the memory, no errors
Xscan shows no errors, no temperature issues
SSD is running the latest firmware.
Running the last available SMC Version
Reset NVRAM

Tried restoring from Time Machine onto a completely different drive to rule out the SSD, freezing still occurs.

Tried rolling back from Time Machine to 10.8.2 but still crashing

My first though its the video card. Could possibly be time for an upgrade.
5870 or 6870 perhaps

If its not video related, what else could it be?

Open to suggestions.

It seems to me you did not start from a clean System, all you do here is reimporting files which may or do affect the OS.

Install a new OS, Update it to 10.8.3 preferably with the Combo update downloaded from Apple and see if this did the trick.

Importing TM and using Migration Assistant seems to get many people into trouble.
You could even use a USB stick (minimum 8 GB) and see if that works.

Have already done so, wiped the drive and started with a ML install from USB. Updated to the latest version.
Even with just the OS running, no apps, it will freeze in Safari on a website
That's what making me think its the video card

So 10.8.3 might have fried your GPU, or there is GPU firmware inside the update.
Apple should really get their act together, too many bugs in OS X nowadays.
I just bought a Mini, went from a Powerbook on 10.5.8 to ML, never from 10.0 to 10.5.8 I had trouble, now there are bugs everywhere.

Non-removable or non-reversable firmware updates scare me. And it seems like that is the way all of them are in Apple-land, for the most part. For that reason I avoid them unless they address an issue I am having.

But to the question being asked, I have not read that 10.8.3 had an included update to any firmware or not. It looks like something like that would need to be included in the release notes.

So safe mode is my only recourse till I get a new card. What plays best with ML today?

Upgrading to 10.8.3 won't have fried your graphics card. If it has failed it's a coincidence.

Have you looked at the Console Log, this may give a better indication of the problem?

There is nothing in the update that would have "fried" your video card (there was a firmware update to MacBook Pro only). Are you running any background 3rd party apps (e.g. fan control or browser plug ins) that may be hogging RAM and nor releasing it? This is most likely some software conflict. Disable all those 3rd party add one and restart. If cured, reinstall one at a time and repeat.

@Intraut. It's a scary thought an update can break a videocard but keep us posted on your situation. If you are able to run in safe mode, the problem may not be the videocard though I could be wrong.

I am not sure either but I think the safe boot will only load apple's GPU drivers and not ATI's nor NVidia's.

Yes I guess you may be right. The thread starter can try to isolate by borrowing a spare videocard to find out. I keep a spare videocard either as backup or in case of troubleshooting.

@Macsonic I will keep this post updated with my progress. Trying to track down a replacement card to see if that will rectify this problem

@justperry I think you're right, Safe Boot is not loading ATI drivers

I was able to secure a Apple 5770 for a good price. For my needs more than enough.

Popped it in and the system is running fine. Youtube, .mp4 720p videos, high res RAW editing, no freezes so far

I have a thread on this as well. I tied it to browsers using flash. Just playing games it ran just fine in OSX. Only with flash based videos playing did it crash in Firefox and Chrome(never tested Safari myself)

same issue - issue accross all computers on network with flash

ive had the same issue. flash is touch and go on my Mac Pro tower since update. Right down to crashing on flash video and taking the whole thing with it. Only with flash video. I doubt it has anything to do with a hardware issue. I wouldn't freak to much about it. If it was a true hardware issue you would probably be having an issue with ALL video related things or muli-video related issues. Honestly ive never been happy with flash on the mac for years and Ive worked with flash at jobs... just turn on the

HTML5 Video

Try an experimental version of the YouTube HTML5 video player. on youtube and call it a day until the update fix comes though
