I've had my MacPro since December - just got the MacBook today. When going through setup on the MacBook, I entered my .mac info, and the MacBook created my harddrive name as "toddburch", which is the same harddrive name as my MacPro.

How do I rename it? I forsee problems, or at least confusion on my part, with both drives being the same. (Perhaps it's not technically an issue, but I would still like to rename it.)

Thanks, Todd

In System Preferences go into Sharing. At the top will be the computer name, just select edit and change the name to what ever you wish, making sure to keep the .local

EDIT, Sharing not Network

I had already changed the Mac name (in Sharing) from Todd Burch's Computer to "Burch's Computer". That worked great.

What I'm referring to is the harddrive name, as in /Users/toddburch/desktop... and as is found in Finder in the left frame.

To re-name your harddrive select it and hit enter. (which wouldn't happen unless you do it from the finder, renaming your HD doesn't affect it)

A reminder, do NOT rename your home folder.

woo-hoo! OK, In Finder, it's now renamed. That was easy. (CONTROL+mouse click, then "rename") I renamed it to "burch".

In Terminal, it still shows:

todd-burchs-computer:~ toddburch$

Will a reboot resolve this?

Thanks. Todd

Which part do you want to change? "tood-burchs-computer" is the computer name, which is changable in the Sharing preference pane. "toddburch$" is your user account/home folder short name, which isn't so easily changable.

Take a look at this if you want to change the short name.

I decided it was easier to reinstall than do the 40 step process. ;)

You mean, you reinstalled OS X?

I should have mentioned that you could have just created a new user as well and transferred everything to your new home folder.
