Just ordered a new(ish) MacPro. Shopped around and did this rather than get Apple parts

2.66GHz refurb from the Apple Store - £1499 (Saving £200)
2GB RAM kit from Crucial - £300 (Saving £200ish - hard to tell as you can't get 2x1GB sticks from the Apple store)
250 GB Hard disk from Kompact - £60 (Saving £210)
20" Monitor of eBay for £320 (Saving £200) to go with a 23" I already had

That saves over £800 - I recommend it to anyone who is on a budget. RAM and Hard disk were installed in 5 mins. If you can get past the whole 'refurb' and second hand issue - its worth a think!

Runs Photoshop/Illustrator/inDesign/Quark6 fine.

Its the nuts.

Carlisle, Up Norf!
Nice one. It's worth doing, Apple charges quite a lot for upgrades (Especially, IMO, RAM) but its worth paying the extra if you aint got the nads to upgrade yourself. However, in the MacPro is easy, so everyones a winner.

Nice one man

Hah! I ordered a refurbished Mac Pro last week!

Dual 2.66GHz Dual-Cores
250GB Hard Drive
Standard Graphics card 256MB
1 SuperDrive

Paid $2,199
Saving $299
Pretty sweet deal!

I also heard that refurbished machines are better than new machines because you're almost guaranteed to get a working machine because Apple has already looked at it and made sure it is working before they sell it. However, with a new machine, there's a possibility to get a faulty or completely dead computer on delivery and have to send it back and get and wait for Apple to fix it and by then you would have a refurbished machine for full price (plus the hassle of sending it back). I can't prove this theory though because I still have yet to receive mine. I'll let you know when it gets here (says it should be here tomorrow).... we'll see.

This is my 3rd refurb/demo

Before the MacPro I bought a Powerbook 17" and it is as good as new and before that a G4 450mhz which still works just fine.

I know people like to have a new shiny computer and think refurbs is the same as wearing someones elses unwanted underwear, but its the way to go for me.

I ordered a stock refurb Mac Pro 2.66 today. I should have it in a week. I'll try to drop by here and report on my purchase. Who knows, maybe AppleSanta will drop an extra gig of RAM in it.

Sweet! That's the same one I got. Mine's been running perfect since I got it. Good luck man! Apple refurbs should be perfect because they've been tested and fixed up. It's better than buying new... in my opinion!

 {jaw hits the table} 16gb of RAM?!! :-O

Back on topic, the refurb prices sure are great and getting the memory and hard drives from elsewhere is definitely the way to go. If I couldn't have gotten the Higher Education discount I would have been sorely tempted with the Refurbs!!
