MacPro - Security update, white loading screen after reboot...help sought.

Hi all,

First day with mac's, playing with widgets, automater, iphoto etc...was enjoying it untill I did the updates, heck still enjoying it as I'm reading my book now.

I followed the prompts, download an update, then followed the reboot request. Having done the reboot after the download as prompted too, it came back up to a white loading screen, apple logo and spining image. An hour later it's still there with little or no disk activity.

I don't know what's in that patch file, and I could not find anything similar, although more forums to search yet But my laymans guess it's stuck...

Anybody got a tip for me, will be on to applecare in the morning, unless I/you can phatom it out...

ahh. that happened to me in the Apple Store when I was playing on a Mac Pro. After about 20mins it came back alive, but with a little box asking where to boot its info from.

Just so you know, I've seen it happen, so I sort of know what you're saying. it does suck though getting a new computer, and then having it freeze on you.

Just call Applecare, they'll ask you what you was doing and what happened and so on. Chances are, they'll tell you put your restore disc in and do a system diagnostic. Im sure someone will come in here and tell you how, I cant remember as I've never had to do it.

Found a post talking about this issue on a ibook.

So it's gone from an "argh" moment to a learning moment...better to know now what to do *if* it goes bang and I have data on it, than not know later.

So it's hold mouse down at power on/start up to get the tray open.

Hold the C key down with osx disc in to bring up menu and away I go

Question is, do apply the same update?

I think not till I've spoken to the apple chaps.

Go to Apple's Mac OS X web page and download the 10.4.8 Intel COMBO Update.

You also want to be sure to repair permissions any time you've added ANY software.

Also open System Preferences and be sure that your Mac OSX volume is selected as the primary boot start up volume, then lock it,

Thanks for that, following more reading and since I could not do anything with the loading screen I decided on learning how to rebuild/update.

It went fine, very painless. When it came back up i had an efi update waiting for me.

I'll be sure to check the items you've posted, especially the one about permissions.

I'll get back to my voyage of discovery and enjoyment now. I need to push past the os goo and get productive
