I just ordered 2x4GB ram for my macpro1,1.

I currently have 3GB in it (2x512MB + 2x1GB)

Does anybody know what the best way to lay these out would be? I guess I should have asked this before ordering...

Thanks!

Put the 4gig sticks in the first bank, and the 1gig sticks in the second slots. If you don't need the last 1 gig from the 2x512s, leave them out. They will slow down the memory performance a touch, and crank out heat even if not being used. No upside to installing them.

this was a doc for the 1,1

So just to make sure - 2x4GB goes into A1/A2, 2x1GB goes into B1/B2, and the 2x512MB are relieved from duty.

Do you have to install ram in pairs in the 1,1? I have two 1 gb sticks and want to buy one 4 gb to make 6. can i do this?

UPDATE: Found my answer. Must be installed in pairs or the Mac Pro will refuse to boot. Just ordered 4x2gb sticks and will do again in a couple of weeks. I have no need for 32 gb.
