looking at a used MP3,1 that may be a single proc 2.8.
I assume for the purposes of production that these machines came with 2 sockets and I could either add one matching or a new pair.
Is that true?

@tsialex do you know why Apple went back to a daughtercard system for the Mac Pro 4,1/5,1, like in the later PowerMacG4s, after having 'normal' socketed CPUs in the early Mac Pros?

it's a totally different platform used with MP4,1 and MP5,1. MP1,1/2,1 and 3,1 are essentially the same Intel C2D server platform improved, while with MP4,1 it's a totally different one and then you need different chipsets for single/dual CPUs - that's why Apple went to backplane/CPU trays.
I was mid upgrade the procs on my 1,1 to 2x X5365 when I accidentally ruined CPU 1 (closest to the top) socket.
My buddy what does "close" work, the shop he works for in NYC has closed up. So he doesn't have the gear needed.
Would this 1,1 still run with 1 proc in the CPU 2 socket, either the OEM or X5365?
