My Early 2015 MBP is very very near end of it's life (poor battery health, screen starting to flicker, storage near full capacity for my use) so I am very interested in the 2021 14" MBP. I do what I usually do which is come on MR and check the Buyer's Guide. For the 14/16 MBP, it's currently at neutral and by the time I will actually get the 14" MBP, I believe the M2 chip will be unveiled. Will I be better off holding out for next Apple Event and see if they will introduce the 14 MBP with M2 with possibly only a few months of actual delivery time difference? The 14" MBP currently won't be delivered until late July in my country. What do you guys think?

I don't foresee the M2 being matched up with a comparable 14"-capable model (i.e. more RAM, better screen, better CPU/GPU) for another year.

I did just order a 14" 10/16/16GB/1TB for work, and I'm not the least bit concerned about Apple announcing a replacement this year.

The 14/16” just came out so the M2 will definitely not outshine the M1 Pro/Max models as it will likely be reserved for iPad Pro’s & entry level MacOS devices.

You have to ask yourself what you want because there’s a ton more differences between MacBooks besides the chip.

There's not a lot of precedence to go on, but it is likely that even if the M2 is shipping in the next couple of months, the M2 Pro and M2 Max will not be in products for at least several more months or even a year. Assuming Apple keeps the current lineup, the 13" Macbook Air and/or 13" Macbook Pro will get said M2, but the 14" will wait for the M2 Pro/Max.

I bought the 16 at launch. My general approach is to use my MacBook Pros for a decade. My 2008 MacBook Pro died in 2018. I have 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pros that I expect will last until they are ten years old. The 2015 is my backup. The 2014 is my son's backup. The 2021 MacBook Pro 14/16 are luxury rides.

If Apple does not announce the M2 chip in WWDC, I find it extremly unlikely Apple launched M2 Pro/M2 Max at an October event. Personally, I see the 14/16-inch MacBook Pro's on a 2-year cycle.

Given the insane performance of the M1 Pro/M1 Max, the 14-inch is a great buy.

MR bases its recommendations based on the average time between updates to each Mac line. Right now, I would not base a purchase on MR's recommendation as we are in uncharted territory when it comes to the next M-chip iteration. We have nothing to go on.

I would suggest purchase if you have the need. If you feel you can wait it out, then do so. I expect by October we will see M2s likely.

Thanks everyone. I didn’t even think there would be a ‘regular’ M2 before a M2 Pro/Max. This makes much more sense. I ordered the 14” MBP before I posted and like the last post, I thought maybe I could get a M2 MBP 14” by October which is only a few months from my current delivery date of the M1 Pro 14”. However, it certainly makes more sense to see a M2 in a 13” MBP and then next year we’ll see a M2 Pro/Max for 14/16 MBP. Thanks for always being helpful everyone!
