I'm an old man (Senior Citizen) and about to retire soon. I've always harbored thoughts of retiring to a nice warm tropical island when I do. I have to start planning on downsizing soon if I want to pull this off.

In late 2023 I went to an island in the South Pacific. (Sadly, because I'm an American and not a citizen of their country, they won't let me retire there. I even went to the Immigration building and asked.)

There was one electronics store on the island and they are surprisingly an Apple Certified Reseller. They had a small Apple display area with a couple of MacBooks, some iPads and an iMac or two. That is about what I expected. (Best Buy they ain't.)

I'm wondering if there's any MR readers out there living on an island and, if so, what is the situation there.

My guess is that some (most?) people will say "No Apple support out here, only for Windows laptops" or, like on the island I went to, maybe if you get lucky you can find a place that supports Apple laptops (and possibly iMacs), but not the more esoteric Macs like a Mac mini or a Mac Studio.

I'm in need of a new Mac before I retire and have been mulling a laptop vs. a Mac mini/Studio and it seems to me like a laptop is the only real logical choice if I were to end up on an island.

That’s the thing with a Mac, once you buy it, you don’t need support until it dies. So just buy it before you retire. But once you retire, you’ll be so busy that you won’t have time to use your Mac.

My macs hold up well in southern florida as my mini is always in a screened area under a glass tv console.
I just dont take them outside in 96ºF humidity unless i see a wayward bear as i did last august.
Which i filmed with an iPad.

Hoped this helped.
