Mac's clock was reset to the beginning

I left my iBook on during the night with the FW HD attached to it. I have not set the energy setting to sleep for this Mac. For some reason, I turned off the electric power from that power outlet (there is a on/off switch for that in the hotel) without knowing about it. This morning, iBook was off with no battery power left. I thought it would go to sleep before the battery power is depleted. Also, the clock was reset to the original time (like 1960 or 1970, I forgot the exact year). So, PRAM was also reset. Do you know the reason for this to happen?

That's strange... it seems as if either the FW hard drive or something else running on the computer prevented it from being able to go to sleep... but it's odd that anything would prevent the 0% forced sleep to prevent shutdown. I've never seen that fail to occur on my iBook. But then I do not have experience running my iBook off a battery with a Firewire device connected for an extended period of time. It seems odd that the system would not be able to handle this, but I guess it's possible....

The battery was depleted to zero (when I booted it up and checked on the battery gauge, it showed 0%).
I am still puzzled with this. Even though the power setting is not set to sleep (it is always on, except for the screen which powers down after 10 min of non-use), it should have gone to sleep automatically if the power source was off (as I turned it off with a wall switch by mistake). The FW drive is one of those Lacie mobile units (no AD adaptor). In the past, I was able to put my Mac sleep with Lacie attached without any issue. To make things worse, it seems PRAM is also re-set because it lost the time (I had to set the time/day/month/year).

My MacBook Pro seems to continue powering the FireWire port, even when turned off. (At least, the power light on my external FW hard drive stays on.) I always unplug external accessories when I turn off and disconnect mains power from my notebook, just to be safe. I would have thought that it wouldn't have drained it THAT far, though.
