Hey Everyone,

Is there an equivalent to MacTheRipper or Handbrake for Windows XP? I don't have a Windows machine, but my friend does, and she needs to copy two of her favourite old DVD movies that are starting to go. Basically, she wants to make copies of the discs onto DVD-R's so that she can continue to watch them on her DVD player.

Thanks so much,

Bobby ;)

GKnot is the best, from what I remember. Not as idiot proof as Handbrake, but it's so versatile that you can create better quality compressions using it imo.

Un problème... When I tried to use DVD Shrink, it kept saying that the disc was encrypted or something like that, and then there was an error, etc. God, Windows..... No offense Windows users.

You need AnyDVD latest version. This software runs in the background and unlocks the DVD. It even works with the lastest dvds.;)

I used FairUse quite frequently when I still used Windows regularly, and it does a fantastic job. It includes a great range selector and splitter, allowing you to remove credits or split series episodes, and rips only the parts it needs from the DVD to the hard drive before encoding. I used to get around 35-40fps on my Athlon 2500. It's apparently no longer free for the 'full version', but the free download version will do any encodes up to 700MB, which more than enough when most movies end up being 4-500MB at medium-high quality.

I gave up on Windows DVD burning. Too unreliable after waiting hours for the rip/burn cycle. My Mac with MactheRipper and Popcorn never lets me down. I'm almost afraid to let loose my G4 until I can verify that a new Mac will give me the same repeatable results.

Hmmmm.

Out of the 100+ DVD movies that I've made archival copies of, I've had maybe 3 or 4 that DVDShrink couldn't de-encrypt and compress down to fit on a single-layer DVD.

Your experiences seem unusual. I've never had any problems backing up my movies with the available Windows software.

1clickdvdcopy is pretty awesome, does everything in one click!!! rips dvd-9's and compresses them to dvd4.5's, allows you to select what gets ripped and what gets ommited , and works really well with series on a dvd.

I agree with mcmadhatter about 1click dvd copy. I use this program along with AnyDVD and I have not had any problems at all.
