So I've tried all the mail apps that people who are unsatisfied with the stock mail app have tried. The most recent one that I sat on was Outlook. I liked the ability to schedule emails and just preferred it to Mailbox. However, with the Notes integration and the ability to link to a message from Notes, I've decided to switch back to the stock Mail app. One thing I've noticed is that it does not receive email instantaneously, and that's unbelievable. This is for a Gmail account. I may be missing something, but the only setting I can find makes Gmail a fetch account with 15 minutes the only available option. Is this really the only way to check my Gmail account through the Mail app? I have to wait every 15 minutes to check the messages? I sure hope I'm missing something.

yup. you're not missing anything, other than good things in life for those 15 minutes. stop checking your phone so much.
Funny, I have the GMail app on my Android tablet and it takes approximately one year before an email comes in. I'd take the 15 mins and stop complaining. GMail is absolute horse poop.
It's been discussed a million times, but the short version is yes, there is no push for Gmail or anything else that isn't iCloud mail, Exchange, or (I believe) Yahoo. Basically, there is no standardized, free and open push protocol suitable for mobile devices – you won't get push with most email accounts in Apple Mail. Third-party clients that support push with Gmail do it by routing all your mail through their own servers, and generating their own push notifications.

Yeah, but it's the free and open part. Exchange is the only true push protocol that anyone can in theory make use of, but doing so requires paying hefty licensing fees to Microsoft, which limits the appeal, especially for free accounts. Apple has their own proprietary push protocol that they use for iCloud Mail, but which is not generally otherwise available - they seem to have a special arrangement with Yahoo, but it's not something just any mail provider can choose to support. So for most mail providers, it's either pay a bunch of money to Microsoft, or don't have push support in the Apple's mail client on iOS.
