Made a mistake on my apple order

Hi,

I received my new mac mini last week and I've just realised I should have asked for a superdrive, but didn't configure that on my order. I guess I have two choices:

1) Send the mini back and order a new one (and pay for the shipping)
2) Just order a superdrive and fit it myself - don't know if this is even possible

Which would be cheaper?

I'm sure Apple would work with you on this. Give 'em a call and explain your situation. Installing a SD on your own in a Mini may be difficult, though I'm sure there's someone else on this forum who could tell you more about it.

first thing i would do is give apple a call and see if you can work things out. since it's a new computer installing a superdrive yourself will void your warranty.
second thing i would get in contact with some third party vendors and see if they can install it for you and if they are already in there ask them for a bigger hard disk drive!

Hmmm. Hopefully Apple will work with you. I know that, in the U.S., you cannot simply return the mini and re-order a BTO config, as your initial order was also BTO (1GB ram).

When I ordered my 15" PB last year, I didn't know that the backlit kybd was an option on the low-end 1.33GHz 15". The next day, when I realized, I tried to modify my still-not-assembled order, but was too late. The web site info was out of date, and my PB was already en route. I was told in no uncertain terms that I could not return the unit unless it was defective. I suppose I could have done something to make it defective, but I didn't have the heart.

I've sent them an email about it with my web order number. I looked through their T&Cs and it looks like I can return it but have to pay shipping:

You can return it because of UK law. If you have to pay though, perhaps it isn't worth the effort and maybe you could get a usb drive instead?

Yes, Apple says I can return it too.

I would rather return it and get a new mini, or buy a superdrive and get it fitted internally maybe at the Apple store, Regent St.? I have already got an external firewire HD on order, the mini is supposed to make my desk TIDY! I don't want more clutter on there unnecessarily.

So, my original question remains - we'll see what Apple comes up with.

Apple have arranged for TNT to collect my mini and will issue a full refund including shipping!

Ordering a new mini now... hopefully the new mini will arrive before the old one is collected.

I'm actually thinking about buying an iMac instead - I did find the graphics on the mini to be a tad slow, and the HD, even at 80Gb was on the low side. What the hell, the mini proved to be such a great test machine, that I'm going to go for a 20" iMac...
