Hey All - SO yeah, I chose the glossy screen when I bought my 2.16ghz C2D MBP, and although I do like how it looks (no photo editing going on here), it bothers my eyes very much. I use it quite a bit in med school and after just an hour or so, my eyes start to burn. Also, I have been experiencing issues with my fan in the upper left corner of the keyboard...it is a loud noise (like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike tire). I have had it replaced by an Apple store, but that didn't help. Applecare is sending me a box so that they can take a look at it. My concern is, if they end up giving me new MBP, will it come in a box as if I were to buy it brand new? How does the replacement work? And can I exchange it for one with a matte screen? If I don't end up getting it replaced, are my only options to sell it, then get a new one, or trade it w/ someone...? thanks much for input - i wish i would have spent more time with them before purchasing online.

Are you sure you can't just ask for a replacement straight away? Don't let AppleCare take a look at it! It only traps you in their system. That's what happened to me, but after I called them a bunch of times they finally agreed to sent me a replacement. And then another one. And then I got my money back.

Demand a replacement right away!

applecare will normally not give you a new machine, they will most likely fix yours, if you didn't buy it too long ago you could try to convice them to exchange it for a matte one.
i feel you about the glossy i was pretty much set on the glossy, seen many pc's with glossy screen, went to a store to check, saw a glossy mbook et matte mbookpro et i actually like the matte better, dunno why exactly but felt i would rather like the matte, go figure :D

When I got a glossy screen on my Vaio about 2 and half years ago, I initially had some problems with the glossy display, but eventually I got used to it. If you've never used one before, I'd say give it another couple of weeks and see if you adjust to it. Once I did, I loved it so much I ended up getting the glossy display on my new MBP.

So, do glossy screens create sore eyes

So, I was just about to start a thread about this, having had a 13" macbook now for a few days. I've decided to go for the 15", but part of my question about the macbook - which is really GREAT, is that I seem to have this eye strain. At first, I thought it was something else, but then using the 15" macbook pro of a friend of mine, I seemed to have LESS issue.

I thought maybe it was the screen pitch, so I made things larger on the 13", but that didn't really seem to relieve the problem.

Could it be the glossy screen? What would be causing this, is the image differant, or brightness, or what? I actually thought the glossy looked nice, but now really not sure if I go up to the 15", if i'll get the glossy or the matte.

A couple things... I have had my MBP since mid-december, which is too long to ask for a swap. Also, I haven't "gotten used to" the glossy/glare screen, unfortunately, if anything, it has gotten worse on my eyes. As for Applecare, do you have to request a new machine in order to get one replaced?? Or will they offer you a new one if problems persist. So far, I have had problems with the fan noise, the annoying double click of the trackpad button, 3-4 kernel panics a week (still ongoing), safari issues, and superdrive inconsistencies. thank goodness for applecare i guess. thanks for input

I think that people who experience sore eyes with glossy screens would likely have the same problem with matte screens, but thats just a guess. I have a glossy and I have no problems with my eyes and I use it for 8+ hours a day.

As far as the fan making a noise like a card in the spokes of a bicycle I'd say that one of the fan wires is touching the fan blade.

One possibility is that your eyes are trying to focus on the screen with interference (reflections/glare) and thus straining them. You switch back from focusing on the reflection/glare to the contents on the screen...and then back again.

I have a glosst screen on my MBP 17 and I like it, but i do understand that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. If you use your laptop at home, and Apple won't exchange the screen for you, you may want to consider getting a second monitor. I use two and love the extra screen space!

I've owned both glossy and matte screens. Glossy screens look and work great if you you use indirect lighting. If you are using direct lighting or overhead fluorescent lighting, glossy displays can be aggravating.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here... Apple owes you a repair of any issue with the fan (even a pure nuisance issue), but not a replacement. Furthermore, they do not owe you a swap because you changed your mind about what you want. You should have done more in-depth research with a glossy screen, and/or you should have to pay a restocking fee if you do swap it out for a matte. That's your fault, not Apple's. Some like glossy and some don't, but it's up to that person to figure it out, not Apple to be omniscient. Still, Apple is quite gracious and may do it for you without any fee or hassle regardless. Maybe you'll get lucky.

It took me some time getting used to my girlfriends MacBook screen (having to move my head to perfectly align the screen) but I still much prefer my matte MacBook Pro screen.

In the beginning my eyes were sore after some light usage but now I am used to it.

question

doesn't this beg the question, that if it took a while to "get used" to it, there might be some ocular degradation or impact?

Is it a good think, to have to get used to the display?

Hey - I understand completely....I just got my mbp back from repair and didn't hear the fan noise upon start up. THey replaced both fans, although only one was making noise.
I didn't mean to imply that I wanted to apple to just trade my mbp for a matte screen one...i realize that it was my fault for not doing enough research on the issue....about the replacement, however; i feel that if there were enough problems with a computer, apple would realize that it is just not a good unit and it needs to be replaced. In my case, i will continue to send it in with problems and if they do replace it, I am wondering if they would replace it with a matte? regardless, at this point, I need it for school and would rather not have to send it in again...although I am kicking myself for not going w/ matte!! anyone in the Bay Area want to trade???? :) Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
