Made my drive too small, can I do another as a D:?

I made a 20gig partition for XP, and that is great. But some of these games take up a lot more gigs than I expected.

Can I partition another drive with FAT32, and make it a D:, with which I can install applications on to?

Can bootcamp do all this without hosing my current install?

If you want to add another partition using Boot Camp, and keep your existing Windows install the answer is no.

If you go back to the Boot Camp Assistant after installing Windows your only option is to remove the Windows partition.

While you can dynamically resize Windows partitions with Partition Magic, there isn't a viable alternative for resizing HFS+ partitions to my knowledge. You could clone your OS X drive to an external, Use Partition Magic to resize your Windows drive, then reformat and clone back the Mac partition. That's an awful lot of work.

Your other (and probably not much more time consuming) option is going to be to start over in Boot Camp with a bigger partition and reinstall Windows.

I have done this before using Winclone.

I haven't done it in a long time now but the procedure was

Clone Windows with option selected for restore to a different partition size.
Restore the hdd to one partition.
Create a larger partition
Winclone the partition back.

Of course any procedure such as this has a risk of data loss so backup first.

Alternatively you could look into MacDrive, which allows the HFS partition to be read/write from windows. You could then install the game files in your HFS partition and use the games that way. They have a free trial.

Disk Utility can make certain changes to your partitions without destroying anything, and it will tell you before destroying data, so you can go ahead and try it as long as you are careful and watch what you are doing (and don't go ahead if Disk Utility says something like "doing this will destroy data", because it means it). It usually _can_ make your HFS partition which MacOS X uses smaller.

Windows has the restriction that Windows must be on the last partition, and it doesn't work with more than three partitions. So if you have MacOS X first, followed by Windows, it should be possible to make the MacOS X partition smaller and then put a Fat32 partition in the empty space. Proceed carefully. I can't tell you whether Windows would use that partition without problems.

Very easy and safe method is buying an external drive. You might even look at an 8 GB thumb drive; probably cheaper than any external drive that you could buy, depending how far 8 GB will get you.

I did this last week when I wanted to change my Macbook's Vista partition from 40GB to 70GB. I had no problems at all, so this is what I'd recommend. It took about an hour from within Leopard and I didn't even have to reboot once

OK just to be clear, I don't want to change my current partition in anyway, I just want to add ANOTHER FAT32 partition, that my Windows partition can 'see' and that I can therefore use to install applications on.

So, I have a 20gig C:, and add another 20gig D:. Can I do that?

Through Disk Utility you could partition another 20GB of the Mac's HDD as MS-DOS (FAT) nondestructively, and then share it to VMWare. Boot Camped though, you're stuck with the WinClone/Restore to single partition/Recreate larger BC partition scenario described above. There is no other option to add space.

So the Disk Utility 20GB FAT partition wouldn't be visible to Windows through boot camp. Drat!
