Magic keyboard won't pare with iPad

Yesterday I tried my magic keyboard with my iPad (air 2) for the first time and it paired immediately and worked flawlessly.
Today it just will not pair at all, have tried turning the keyboard on/off multiple times, bluetooth on/off multiple times, restarting the iPad. Nothing works.

I can pair the keyboard with my Mac no problem, and can see its battery level is 100%.
But I just cannot get it to pair with the iPad. (The Mac is not turned on while I'm attempting to pair with the iPad).

Its positioned right in front of the iPad, inches away, and I've tried moving it around. Absolutely nothing at all works to get the damn thing connected.

Why could it pair yesterday but refuses to today?

Choosing forget device then trying again made it connect, but now input on the keyboard doesn't do anything in any app.

I can connect and use the keyboard with my iPhone.

Any ideas why the bugger it doesn't work with the iPad?
