Magic Trackpad 2 won't connect on restart any more

In the last couple of weeks, my Magic Trackpad 2 won't connect automatically on macOS boot up. I have to go into the BT preferences panel, and manually connect every time.
I've tried NVRAM reset, switching BT on and off, etc. but nothing seems to work.
The other thing is that if I rename the device, each time I reconnect to it, it reverts back to the original name!
Any ideas?
