After some some years not using it, I wanted to use my 1st generation Magic Trackpad again (now having a larger screen where the trackpad scrolling feature would be appreciated).

Im using a Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008; with internal Apple bluetooth module, I think Bluetooth 2.0+EDR) with OS 10.11.6.

The trackpad itself is fine and works as it should on a MacBook 13" Retina (Late 2013) with OS 10.12.6 -
but on my Mac Pro the trackpad is not being recognized by the OS as trackpad but rather as a generic mouse.

After successful Bluetooth pairing the Magic Trackpad shows up correctly in the Bluetooth system preferences, even with the correct 1st generation trackpad icon - and is also being listed in the system profiler Bluetooth section as "Apple Wireless Trackpad".

But it doesn't show up in the "Trackpad" system preferences ("Wait for a Bluetooth trackpad to be discovered." - "No trackpad found.") and therefore can't be configured in any way

When it's connecting the Apple Mouse icon is briefly displayed, not the Apple Trackpad icon like before or as on the MacBook.

As "mouse" it's only usable for clicking and moving the mouse cursor, but not for scrolling or any of the 2 to 4 finger gestures, also my preferred "tap to click" or the two-finger secondary click can't be used (or configured) this way.

It has certainly worked on this hardware setup in the past, but with an older system (I don't remember which, probably Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks) - something must have changed in El Capitan?

As far as I know with system integrity protection there is no easy way to use a newer external Bluetooth 4.1 adapter, and even if - how to tell the system to use the external and ignore the internal one?

See below also the listings from system profiler.

Thanks for any help...

This isn't much help for you but...

I have the exact same MP 2008 running 10.11.6 as you and have had no issues with my
early magic trackpad.
