where do the icons come from? lots of sites just show a capital letter. but (as if by magic), the macrumors tabs in my safari just changed...from an "L" to the macrumors apple logo.

thought it was the favicons, but lots of sites with custom ones don't show that in the tab.

anyway, curious how these icons are set...

It’s a special vector image that websites need to implement specifically for this feature. When that is not specified, Safari will take the first letter of the website title and the dominant colour of the favicon or ‘apple-touch-icon’ as background. Sometimes Safari seems to accept regular favicons for some reason, but I’m not sure why.
