Does anybody have experience with this box?

http://www.magma.com/expressBox-3t-db

It's what I've been looking for. Three PCI cards and will take 4 2.5" drives. Two things I'm wondering, is it worth waiting for a TB 2.0 version (the TB is on a daughter card so should be swappable like the Sonnet) and two, any cheap SSD cards? If you want internal 2.5" drives you need to get a card to connect them to.

I've been using a this TB setup since Fall of 2012. It works fine. Whether it's worth it or not probably depends on what you want to put in it. My SSD RAID throughput from my Sonnet card was capped in the Magma where it runs full blast in my MP. My 10GbE card seemed about the same.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me ...

  • You are using the internal drive caddy? With what card?
  • How well does the box work with putting the computer to sleep? Does anything disconnect improperly, or it works fine?

This product looks very similar.

I also see the same box showing up on B&H under "Dynapower"

Mine came out before the internal caddy although the molex connectors are in there. I ran mine with a Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro with 2 OWC Mercury Extreme 6G SSDs in RAID0 (for my After Effects cache), an ATTO FastFrame NT11 10GbE card for editing off my NAS and a Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P eSATA card for my legacy eSATA RAIDs.

The speeds ween't as fast as the cards are in my Mac Pro but certainly expanded the capabilities on my MBP while I waited for the nMP to be announced (and finally gave up).
