I've got a magnetic car mount (basically a small magnet, stuck onto the dash with adhesive. Then a plastic cradle has a piece of metal on the back of it, which then magnetises to the dash), and I'm wondering if I can use it with my iPhone without it damaging anything? The magnet will be about 3/4" away from the phone.

Thanks.

eeeeeek.

Maybe im old school, but i allways remeber magnets being the <insert electronic device here>'s worst enemy. The floppy disk was an example. We've come a long way.

You could try it.... I guess in theory it shouldnt leave any visable damage, so it would be covered by Apple. (Im not encouraging dishonesty though)

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I'll just remember to back up I guess!

Also, my current phone is a pocket pc (yawn), and it's been on the magnetic mount many many times over the past 2 1/2 years with seemingly no problems at all...not sure if the iPhone will be different.

I've read differing arguments on this, some claim the magnets are dangerous to the phone, some claim the magnets have no effect. I think if you aren't putting the magnet RIGHT ON the iphone it is fine.

Magnets + Hard Drives, Floppies, Tapes = BAD!!!!!!!!

magnets +flash storage ≠ bad,

but there may be something in there that a magnet could harm, but I wouldnt worry about it. :p

Magnets and the iPhone are perfectly fine. I know this because I "camoflage" my iPhone by keeping it in a Blackberry leather case holster.

Blackberries, by default, rely on a series of magnets hidden in their casings to determine whether they in or out of them, so I've got two magnets embedded in this case. And it hasn't hurt my iPhone one bit. :)

i wouldn't worry about it, there are even a few magnets in the iPhone in the speakers.
