On my Magsafe, the cable near the part that connects to the computer ripped and wires inside are exposed. Now my Magsafe intermittently stops charging. My Macbook is under warranty for around 3 more weeks. I'm about to buy Applecare's extension plan too :p

Are you not afraid of the potential electrocution hazard? If I were you, I wouldn't use the charger, even if it "works". Yes, Apple should replace the MagSafe cord or whatever you call it. Go to your friendly local Apple Store and ask them for a replacement.

...

Btw... How did it break?

Many of the original ones did that, we've had five stories here about it, one guy got shocked, one started a fire...

Theyll replace it if you have been using it normally, and not letting your dog chew on it.

edit: I say original because for a while now theyve been shipping with an extra bit of reinforcing plastic that supposedly prevents the issue.

I've been using it normally... I bought my Macbook in September of '06:

I just noticed it this morning.

If I bring it to the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in NYC, do I need to bring my entire computer or just the Magsafe?

bring your computer for good measure. all they will need is your serial number to verify the warranty status- some geniuses will let you get by with just that info, some will need to see the machine to be sure.

depends on which side of the bed they woke up on.

also, be sure to make an appointment online (apple.com/retail)

at a busy store like that, chances are that they are completely booked.

I got the same problem today and decided not to go to the Apple store but call Apple tech support instead.

The guy only asked me did I see it when it happened and I said I just noticed it which is the truth.

He is then ordered a replacement for me which will come to my house via UPS. After I get the replacement, there are instructions for putting the defective one into the UPS box and giving it to UPS to send it back to Apple.

If you don't send the box back within 10 business days they charge you for the adapter. You also gotta give them your credit card for a $1 deposit.

I think apple tech support is better than going to the apple store as they might give you guff, while the phone support people are more understanding.

Mine too

I bought my Mac Book last August (2006) and it was going to do exactly the same thing.

Then it got stolen and I got a new 17" instead. And sure enough, it does have the plastic reinforcing at the same place it was going to break.

I hope you at least thought of unplugging the power adapter from the outlet, BEFORE unplugging it from the MB.

. . .

And don't pull the cable...

. . .

Are you feeling depressed?

Well, I went to an Apple Store and they replaced it for me, no questions asked. All I brought was the Magsafe and the serial written on a Post-It. The new one works better... the old one used to make weird noises. :p

YMMV, but my Macbook's screen no longer flickers with the new Magsafe. My Macbook would flicker uncontrollably if I put it on the max brightness. I already had Apple replace the inverter, but now all seems well. *knocks on wood :D*
