Probably never. There’s no reason to make an iPad port-less. In fact, it shouldn’t be port-less otherwise you can’t connect peripherals. Also, can you imagine setting an iPad on a charging pad?

Wired charging is slow enough for iPads. Plus, wireless charging is very wasteful.

Three’s so many reasons why wireless charging doesnt belong on an iPad
- Large batteries take too long to charge
- Materials. An iPad with a glass back isn't something anyone wants
- Wireless is energy inefficient and wasteful
- Ports are important for other “computer” reasons
- Charging pad would be huge. (MagSafe solves the target but would cause it to wobble on a desk)
- There’s no big benefit

I’m not saying it wont ever happen. I just dont think there’s a compelling reason for it (yet)

I’d love an iPad with a carbon fibre back. Light, and fine for induction.

Can you imagine the charger? Will be the size of a frying pan and the magnet will be so strong it will end up attracting anything metal to it within 5 yards.

Given that the iPad seems to be moving into the desktop substitute space, the USB-C port or its equivalent is likely never going to go away since it allows for the connection of peripherals. The iPad Pro battery is 28.65 watt hours, an iPhone 11 Pro Max is ~15 Watt hours. It takes close to 3 hours to Magsafe charge a iPhone 12 Pro. Since you have to have the port, the battery is almost 2 times larger than an iPhones', and port charging is almost 2x or more faster than Qi or Magsafe charging, doesn't seem to make much sense.

Crappy how?
Having weak magnets (for accessory adhesion at least, doesn’t affect charging usefulness) and low charging wattage from many third party charging bricks comes to mind. Not sure what else is being referred to.

For me I am not sure if I would want to have to dedicate enough surface area to a charging pad that would be large enough to support the full rear side of an iPad. It just seems less practical to me than the small MagSafe charger designed for the iPhone. I most certainly do not want to allow my ipad to lay on a small puck for long periods of time daily.
