magsafe light red; not charging

My mom's macbook is not charging and the light on the magsafe adaptor is red. It sounds like she tried to shut it down and closed it and put it in her bag, and it never actually shut off. She took it out of the bag later and it was hot. Since then it has not charged. My guess is that the overheating did some damage. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice, or is it likely in need of a trip to Apple?

Take it to Apple. You don't want a messes power supply and Apple should be pretty good about fixing/replacing it.
