Mail 5 in Snow Leopard?

Agreed, I can't wait for Mail 5. Mail 4 looks ancient by comparison - I love the new search and organisational features... just looks more logical!
Lion couldn't come quickly enough! But that doesn't mean I'm going to an african jungle to retrieve one

Mail's Search Token feature and other items are probably coming from deeper architectural improvements in Lion.
Also, because Mail 5 was demoed at WWDC, makes it a key selling point to upgrade to Lion. They wouldn't put it on Snow Leopard because it might discourage people from upgrading... thus Apple would not gain much money as they might do by including it in Lion only.
You might want to look into Sparrow. It's essentially Mail 5 + extra Gmail integration. But it's $10, so you may as well just get Lion instead.
I looked at Sparrow, but there is too much Twitter and FB integration for me. Just want a good mail client. Mail 4 works fine, but I miss the side reading pane. I know you can do Widemail or Letterbox, but would rather just wait.

I have a better solution for everyone. I see no need to use desktop clients for email anymore since Windows XP (Outlook Express FTW). If you have Gmail, you can have a Gmail widget in Chrome and open it within browser. No reason to have another application out if you have your browser up. You can also you extensions to clean gmail and make it look REALLY nice.
What's with that Mailbox List still in Mail (now in Mail 5)?
Add a Gmail account and watch the mess unfold. Took me a little while to get a grasp on all of it. Granted, I get it now and it's better than it was, but it's still a mess.
Why couldn't they make the list like what's in Sparrow? Sparrow handles multiple accounts beautifully.

Are you referring to the sidebar, and the Gmail folder with all mail, drafts, etc? With the Favorites bar, you can hide the whole sidebar if you want, and rely on favorites instead to switch between inboxes.
Thank you. Somewhat better but still a mess. I'm finding myself transferring everything to the top now and it's becoming a jumble. Why not do the same sort of logical separation (with unified inbox option) that's in Sparrow? Now I'm using both the favourites bar *and* the sidebar, whereas everything could have been taken care of within the sidebar.
I look at the sidebar in Mail, and I see three trash icons, I see two areas for Gmail, one with friggin brackets around it, I see a separate area for MobileMe, but no inbox in that location. It looks as if Gmail has its own little world (and an errant inbox icon at the top of the sidebar) while normal Apple mail folders are all over the place. All of this is "organized" (if you can call it that) via some hierarchical drill-down menus. Truly sad.

What's wrong with just ignoring the [Gmail] folder and pretending it doesn't exist? Ignore the MobileMe section as well, you don't need it. That's what I do, works fine. I agree that the multiple trashes is absurd, but just close the triangle and treat it as one. No big deal.
I agree with you though, Mail needs to copy Sparrow in this respect.
I can ignore it - tried that. But then I don't get certain Gmail-specific features that for some reason Sparrow seems to pull off in a clean, understandable manner. Even though you're right about ignoring certain things - you and I can do that - but Joe Average will be left quivering in the foetal position, not knowing which folder to use.
Ah well, enough of my rant. I normally love pretty much everything Apple does, and Mail looks brilliant when you look at it from right to left . . . right up until your eyes hit that cluster**** sidebar.
Mail handles Apple accounts very well but that's it, thought I'm not sure why the hell we need a separate MobileMe folder area.

Mail 5 doesn't sync up the "local" sent folder with Gmail's sent folder so one can't really ignore the [Google Mail] folder down the sidebar. I'm sorry but Sparrow is still far superior when it comes to handling Gmail IMAP. I'm hoping they'll implement Mail 5's new conversation view into the next version of Sparrow!

Actually you can do some optimization here :
1) In Mail 5 (and even Mail 4), go to the GMail account setup and make sure that you've checked the "Store mail on server" boxes for Sent, Trash, Spam and Drafts (this is default, I think).
2) Select the "Sent Mail" Sub-Folder under the [GMail] folder, then click on the "Mailbox" menu item, go down to "Use this mailbox for" and select "Sent Mail".
Repeat step 2 for the Trash, Drafts and Spam [GMail] Sub-folders. This will link the "real" Sent, Draft, ... folders to the [GMail] subfolders. The GMail subfolders will not show any more and you get everything synchronized between Mail and GMail server.
Also, you might then go to your GMail account setup with your browser and exclude some labels from showing up as IMAP folders (labels like "All mail" and "Starred").
It's not perfect but cleans it up quite a little.
NB.: I'm running a french version of OS X so menu item names might not be exactly as I translated them.
