Mail 5 - Limit number of messages downloaded?

Is there any way to limit the number of messages Mail 5 downloads? Right now, I have Gmail set to only send the most recent 1000 emails for each folder (label), but given the number of labels I have, that's still a lot of emails. Since Gmail doesn't let you set the limit any smaller than that, is there any way to do it in Mail?

(Or, alternatively, to selectively download folders?)

No, there isn't.

Instead, you should let it download everything. Once it's done, it won't have to do it again.

Our recruiters won't even respond to applicants with a gmail address. Owning your own personalized domain and email for $55 a year will more likely get you hired at most firms. It's as much about privacy but more about being proactive and taking a step forward, above and beyond other candidates.

I would agree - thats the most low down thing I can think of an HR department doing... Really? Gmail is the devil? Hotmail? Yahoo? any other free service, but you call out Gmail? Give me a break. What firm do you work for so I know where to stay away from. Talk about discrimination! Should get sued for your dirty hiring practices!

So what if somebody spends $10 a year for a domain name and uses it to get Google Apps email?

Yeah, that policy is stupid.

(And no, this is a personal account. I was hoping to curb wasted space as I'm on an SSD, and I really don't need any emails on my system that are older than a month or so--certainly not anything going back years. I'll just have to make do with the 1000 message quota I set up and disabled attachments.)

In my experience, if anything, someone with a GMAIL address is viewed as more modern, and 'with it', as opposed to dated Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL extensions.

Also, I have dealt with pretty substantial business scenarios using my personal Gmail acct, discussing multi-million dollar transactions and operations, and have never had my email address be a deterrent.

back to your question,

as in mail 4, go to accounts -> advanced -> keep copies only for offline viewing -> only messages I've read

this will only download the emails you have read. of course, all the headers of your other emails will be downloaded to mail but that will not use any of your disk space (1 header ~ 1kb max.)

I saw that option, but thought it meant messages marked as read (which would be all of them), not messages I read specifically in Mail 5. I'll check it out, thanks.

Honestly, I had nearly 2 Gb of mails. I realized that 90% of the mails I archived were absolutely useless and that I never read them (and won't). So I spent 20 minutes per day during 1 or 2 weeks, and now I have only 60 Mb of mails. I only kept important messages (those with serial keys, mails from my bank or things like that).

Now, instead of archiving all those mails, when I know that I don't need it, I just delete it.
