Mail alerts not working

I have tried resetting the mail alert sound several times, and it may work the first time, but after that it doesn't work at all.
Has anyone else noticed this and is there a fix?

If your using MobleMe as your mail server - this is an issue that started from the server side sometime ago. Year?

AFAIK there is no workaround

I use both Gmail and MobileMe. I don't think I have had this problem on my early 2008 MacBook.
