Mail and iCloud - Experiences/Advice

So I've finally got fed up of the delays in getting Gmail through to the stock mail app and I've started using my iCloud address. I've set up an auto forward on Gmail which still seems to have a slight delay in it before it sends on to iCloud.

Now I've changed my email address once so far in my life (I had a personal domain that I lost in a row with the host) so I won't be giving up my Gmail address (plus it's a cool one that is old enough to just be my name with no numbers ) but is it worth going around the various (many) websites etc changing it or should I just rely on the autoforward.

Any advice or experiences of similar?

Awhile back I did the same thing, autoforwarded my Gmail to my iCloud address to work better with the stock mail app. Now, I'm back to using my Gmail address (my iCloud one receives no mail) and I use a third party email app that plays nicely with Gmail.

At the time, iCloud was not reliably delivering my mail in a timely fashion which is why I stopped using it, but that may no longer be an issue. To answer your question I'd stick with the autoforwarding for a bit. If the slight autoforwarding delay stills bugs you then start giving out your iCloud address. May as well try the easier route first.

If complete control over your email address is important then it's worth owning...a conclusion I reached many years ago.

I don't expect Gmail or iCloud to disappear anytime soon but users have no control of how they work. You can move your own domain to any host of your choosing at any time.

I did have my own domain for many years but then a row with JustHost led to them suspending it and I couldn't move it quick enough. It was my main email address so was important to me so felt the best thing at the time was to move to Gmail.

I may look into my own email address again.

I've been back and forth between gmail and iCloud many times actually. I've been with gmail since it's beta days around 2004 or so. I used it exclusively as my main email until they took away push on iOS devices. At that point i switched over to MobileMe and started using that. The downside was using the web version of iCloud mail, which still is terrible to this day. Since iOS 10, I've had nothing but issues with push with iCloud email so i switched the wife and i back to gmail a final time. We use the gmail app which works great. Both have their tradeoffs but i still can't believe how terrible the iCloud website is for email. I haven't missed using the stock mail app at all...

Hosted Exchange at Godaddy? That's the only way to get push with Godaddy email.

Have you given Fastmail a look? It's fantastic and plays nice with iPhone

I migrated from Gmail to iCloud a few years ago. I kept encountering various problems with Gmail because they use non-standard email protocols (such as how they handle folders).

I went through and changed all my important addresses straight away (Amazon etc), set up a redirect from Gmail and then went through the other accounts at my leisure. I have over 100 logins and changed 5-10 a day whenever I could be bothered. I was aided by using 1Password so I could keep track of where I was up to.

Never looked back since.

I second fastmail is awesome. Can use your own domain as well. Push works perfect.
