Mail.app count in Dock

I use Mail.app to retrieve email from my sbcglobal account. I have several rules set up that sort my email to various folders when it comes in. By doing so, the count (little red splash in the Mail icon on the Dock) never remains. I'm assuming this is because the email is not staying in the mailbox but being routed to the folders.

Is there any way to have the Mail icon in the Dock keep the count while the email is still unread but in various folders?

I've searched the forums but couldn't come up with anything.

For US$8 and only 5 mailboxes, I'm not sure if DockStar is worth it.

Thanks. The $8 isn't bad, but I don't like the limit of 5 mailboxes...maybe a solution if there are no other alternatives.
