Mail app - issue with mail account not present in System Prefs Internet Accounts

I have a mail account in Mail that I want to delete but it's not possible since that account is not present in the System Preferences Internet Accounts.

Any idea how to deal with this? Seems to me that either the System Pref config file is corrupted or maybe the Mail.app. config file.

I've tried to add an account to the System Preferences Internet Accounts with the same data as the one that only shows up in Mail but when doing that no new account is added to System Preferences.

Nope, if I try I get a "The Mail account “xxx@xxx.com” is shared by other applications on this Mac." "You can remove this account in Internet Accounts" and then a link to Internet Accounts in System Preferences.

I have noted other instability issues with Mail app, those might be related to my initial problem if there is a corruption in a config file, but what I have noticed is that when I add a new acc in the account mgr for Mail app some of the already existing mail accounts loose their default SMTP server and reverts to "no SMTP server set" as default.

I have a total of 5-6 different mail accounts that I use with Mail app. One iCloud acc, one Exchange acc and a few other IMAP acc's. I used to have Gmail acc's as well but removed those after the 2-fac auth process was introduced. Don't like to have Google creeping in on me if I can avoid it.

There are some serious flaws in Apple’s internet account management. I reported a similar bug with the Calendar application a while ago, which would still show deleted calendars in the account list or side bar and would even attempt to sync these to my iPhone over Wi-Fi sync. I got the same error message as you. I’ve tried various solutions, including deleting the caches and preferences in ~/Library, but they only made things worse. The only reliable solution so far is to create a new user account and start from scratch.

I reported this bug back in September 2014 during the beta test period. Apple developers acknowledged it and requested more information from me regarding this. However, since then, no word from them and the bug is still open in bug reporter!! It seems that it either Apple is still trying to figure how to fix this or it is just on bottom of bug lists.

I had the problems with Live.com and outlook.com accounts, where one would disappear.

I am testing 10.10.3 and I can say that it is still not fixed. Thanks Apple

I'll report it as well, guess thats the only thing to do.

Maybe I'll do a clean install although I'm hesitant to do that. Actually haven't done a clean install since my first MBPro from 2006 running OSx Tiger. Been upgrading every time since then.

I finally did it! A complete clean install and now things runs very smooth.

Mail issues gone and a whole lot of more empty space on the HD.

Although I think it's quite remarkable that OSx has been working more or less ok for almost 10 years just by upgrading the OS on the old installations as new versions has been released. And of course new MbPro's, this is my 3rd and soon it will be time for a new rMbPro again, I'll just wait for the next 15" to be released.
