Out of nowhere, my mail app on my new rMBP has stopped working. It takes a very long time to load my messages and freezes when you virtually make any action in the application. For instance, if I try to go to the preferences from the top bar, it will freeze.

Also, I cannot quit the app normally and have to force quit. What is the issue here and what should I do to fix this? Like I said, the app literally went from working one minute to being unusable the next. Thanks in advance.

If it's sudden and does it every time, I'd suspect the last message of being corrupt. Every time Mail starts up it tries to display the corrupt message and gets hosed.

Macworld has a good page describing what to do with a corrupt message, here...
http://www.macworld.com/article/1162877/mail_crashes.html

Basically it's holding up the shift key when starting up Mail. That way no messages are selected or displayed. If you can do other things like open the preferences, then that further indicates the last message is causing problems.

You can then slide the message display section over to the right, so you just have the column listing the messages. You could delete the newest message and see if that fixes things.

Also, I'd go through and rebuild the Mailboxes...highlight a Mailbox or multiple Mailboxes and select from the menu Mailbox-->Rebuild.

Hope that helps.
