Clicking on a email us link at a web page opens the Mail.app which we do not use (rather web based mail).

Can not delete the mail.app - says used by Mac OSX

Any suggestions on how to disable the mail.app wanting to step in?

Thanks for your reply -

Problem is one can not access preferences if one has not set up any accounts.
Second problem is that the 'default reader' option in prefs is for selecting a mail client (i.e. Thunderbird) rather than a web based email URL.

I did find I can delete the email app itself (not possible with 10.12 and later AFAIK) however this only stops the email app from opening up.

I think I need to explore the possibility changing the browser setitngs as they all seem to use the OSX mail app by default.

Thanks Brian

To enable 'mailto:' for GMail (when at mail.google.com) in Chrome there is an icon on the right in the address bar/field that looks like an eye that one can select
For Firefox there are options for GMail and YahooMail in preferences>general>applications

I set up a dummy account in the OSX mail.app but there are no options to add a webmail URL like Hotmail etc.
