Same issue

I've had the same issue on iOS 5 GM seed and now on released version on new 4S. Sucks. Lots of data loss after composing an email.

I'm getting the same thing. This is definitely an issue.

iOS 5 on a 3GS.
The mail.app crashes when hitting the send button. It just doesn't send :(

GMail problems sorted

I had this problem too, but I think I have sorted it now. I have 2 Gmail accounts and both were working previously. With my new 4S, one would crash on send every time and the other would not.

Contacted support who were very polite but did not have a solution. After lots of playing I worked out this solution.

1. Delete all email accounts.
2. Reset phone
3. Remove iCloud account
4. Reset phone
5. Add email accounts
6. Reset phone

(So far, this is the rigmarole that the Apple support suggested; it did not fix the problem)

7. I then went into the email accounts: settings-->Mail,contacts, calendars-->Select Email account-->Account-->SMTP-->Other SMTP servers

I had a long list of servers here (this was presumably a legacy from email accounts I had added and removed over the previous life of the phone; I had done a restore from my 3GS when I got the 4S) and I deleted them all (except for the reference to the second email account).

This sorted the problem for me.

Hope this helps anyone following in my footsteps

Similar issues

I have experienced similar issues. I've had my mail app crash (and the email I was trying to send disappeared) when trying to reply to a yahoo address from a gmail address.

It happened a couple of months ago and I gave up and sent from my laptop--today I tried to suss it out:

Replying to an email containing a moderate thread, i typed a short response and hit send. Mail app crashed and the email was not found in drafts or trash. Tried again 3 times with same results.

Fourth time, hit reply and deleted the entire body of the original message and typed response in it's place. Hit send. Mail did not crash, message was sent.

Not a solution, but a work-around worth trying.

My dad just experienced this issue while sending out a pages long email for work. Pressed send, back to home, no sign of the email. Made him rage quite bad, which is totally understandable.
Honestly I just lost a piece of my trust towards Apple's well known 'reliability' as I've always known before. These kind of bugs on such basic functions shouldn't be happening.

There's a 30-50 MB limit (not sure which) on attachments or length of emails. If you exceed it, sometimes you get an error message back. Sometimes, the email simply disappears into the ether. Beware.
