mail - delete from iphone when deleted from server...

How can I set my iPhone mail to delete an email when it checks the server and sees that an email is no longer there? For example:

1) Check email on iPhone and there are 2 new messages.
2) Get home, fire up Outlook which pulls down the emails and deletes them from the server.
3) Check email from iPhone again. It should now see that those emails are no longer on the server and then delete them from my iPhone email inbox.

My WinMo device used to do this. Can this be done with the iPhone?

Doesn't it do that by itself?
Just refresh, and it shouldn't be there anymore.
That's what happens to me, at least, with GMail.

It actually depends on your mail server and how the iPhone retrieves the messages.

On my Gmail account, it syncs with the phone. If I check a message or delete one, it updates to my online account instantly.

On the other hand, my Hotmail account (upgraded to the pay account for POP access) always sees messages as new when they hit the phone. When I read / delete them, that status just updates on the phone only, not online. I have also noticed that when I receive a new message in my inbox, read it online, then check the mail on the phone it comes in as a new message with the unread tag flagged.

If you can you need to use IMAP not POP3, if you e-mail service allows it, to get desired effect.

imap or better

This will only work with imap or other, not pop accounts. Pop doesn't have any sort of sync like that.

AND, apple doesn't offer a delete from server feature on any of their mail clients, so that you could take it down on the iphone with pop, delete on the IPHONE and have it deleted from the server.

I have my email at GoDaddy and I used POP3 on my AT&T Tilt and it actually did delete locally when it saw email had been deleted from the server. I was using POP3.

I do not believe that is possible with the POP3 protocol.

interesting, since that isn't part of the pop protocol.

So, you DL'd mail on your Tilt, via a pop port?

somewhere else, on another client, you DL'd mail and deleted it, and then sync'd back to the server after having deleted that mail from the same local client?

then, DL'd mail on the Tilt again, through the same pop ports, and the mail which was deleted on a different client disappeared from your Tilt inbox, without any additional input?

I'd like to know what ports and pop addresses are for this please, just to understand?

The incoming server I was using was pop.secureserver.net.
The outgoing server was cwmx.com.

I'm pretty sure that you are confused about how either this was set up or how it worked. I do not believe that what you describe is possible using only POP3.

I can absolutely guarantee that it did work this way. I used it that way for about 18 months. I will have to take a look at my port settings, but I know it was POP and that when something was deleted from the server either through webmail or when downloaded to Outlook, it would then automatically delete from my Tilt POP inbox. Maybe GoDaddy was doing something special through a different port or something? But I know it worked this way, I wasn't paying for IMAP or hosted Exchange, and that my server was pop.secureserver.net.
