Mail/iCal - Exchange Support?

As soon as the new MBAs are released, I will be switching from my Win7 laptop. I was curious what the deal is with Exchange support and Apple's native applications? I attempted to do some research, but came up blank. Can you use Mail + iCal as a replacement for Outlook? If so, how is the experience?

I noticed during WWDC that "Exchange 2010" was on the features slide for Lion. I wasn't sure what that meant...

If the answer is "stick with Office" I'm fine with that. I just thought I'd inquire. Thanks in advance.

yes, i'm running exchange 2010, and it works very nicely with both iCal and Mail. you don't even have to type in server names, just your email address and password...everything else is set up automatically. This is on snow leopard, and they will improve it further. You should watch their latest keynote from the WWDC they demo some of the changes.

Thanks for the reply. I've definitely watched the demos a couple of times and it looks great so far.

In iCal do you have the ability to look at shared calendars within your organization? I use that feature quite a bit to facilitate meetings and such.

I don't know about that, I don't use OSX professionally, only at home.
My own personal exchange environment is part of my Windows 2008 R2 domain infrastructure i have as a test environment for my professional work of managing a Microsoft domain infrastructure.

Working all day long with Microsoft and PC/server technology, Apple hardware and OSX is a pleasant way of distancing myself from my job, and i'm just starting to learn

I'm sure someone here will be able to answer your question in detail

EDIT: there is an option called delegation, it' looks like it does what you need...
EDIT #2: It does work, i can access my girlfriends shared calendar and tasks

Awesome, thanks for that. I did find some more info with further searching (and a couple of youtube videos). Looks like this will work for my needs - or at the very least I can give it a try. If it doesn't work out, at least it didn't cost me any extra cash to try!

Don't know if you noticed my edit #2, but it does work, my girlfriend and i have shared our calendar and tasks for viewing, and i can se all of them.

I like Mail better than outlook...but maybe that's because it doesn't remind me of work

I find Outlook 2011 to work better with my work exchange - everything is one place (meetings, etc) and I like how it handles invitations much more than the way iCal and Mail do. I appreciate the whole integrated feeling.

I don't understand the disconnect between the exchange mail and calendar on the iOS devices and the Mac.

My work Exchange mail and calendar is seamless with iPhone and iPad.
With Mac OS X 10.6.8 it just DOESN'T work- it never has.

Any thoughts?

Hmm, you could try a couple of things. You the OWA server instead of what Mail/Outlook detects and make sure that if your login has a domain, you put it in.

That said, I was able to put in my work email address and not outlook and mail figured out the rest on their own.
