Hi. Occasionally in the iOS Mail app, I notice all email items disappear, and then get reloaded from the server. When on wifi, it takes 10-15 minutes to finish reloading all items. This gets very frustrating. Some email navigation seems to work during this process, but attempts to open individual messages go unhanded until after the whole mailbox has been reloaded. Plus, the [seemingly] unnecessary use of my cellular data is extra frustrating when wifi isn't available.

I use gmail, setup as an exchange account on both my iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd gen). I've observed automatic reloading of emails on both devices. Hard to say exactly how often it occurs, but I'd estimate once every couple weeks on each device.

Any insight would be appreciated. Sorry if answered previously. Didn't have luck with search.

I've had this exact problem for months. It only happens to my work exchange email account.

I'm pretty sure I've read it is something to do with a timing setting in the server. It seems to happen when the iPhone tries to connect several times to the server in succession.
