Mail/.Mac push email on iPhone?

I tried looking for a thread on this and for info the netz, but I can't find anything.

Is the iPhone going to support push email from Mail/.Mac just like it will with Yahoo! Mail? I ask because I've been dicking around with the idea of switching to Mail from Yahoo! but I want to reap the benefits of email on my phone in the future.

Mail is just a program, its not an email service. Steve said that the iPhone would support .Mac mail, Gmail, etc... but he didn't elaborate much.

I would hope that if they support push email from Yahoo that they would support a similar service from their own email service, .Mac. Otherwise I'd feel a bit shortchanged for having been a paying customer for a long time.

That's what I was thinking. I don't use .Mac mail because I only use .Mac for file storage. But if I can get push mail from .Mac, I might consider using it.

Also, would I have to create an IMAP account in Mail to use the feature and just download it off .Mac or something?

I think the iPhone's Mail application is just a straight email application. You just set your email up - whether it's POP3 or IMAP - and access it from the iPhone and do practically everything you can do with a desktop email program like Mail.

I don't think it's service-specific or anything.

I think it will be a combination. I think there will be the option to do it as you said, but in the Keynote Steve specifically said that Yahoo will be providing push-email for free. I hope they can do the same thing with .Mac mail.

.Mac mail will push, no doubt about it. There's no reason Apple wouldn't do this.

I have my AOL email set up with the Mail application. I really hope that I can get push email to my iPhone in June.

hopefully not. i don't want my mail locked in PST files, if iPhone brings IMAP to the masses, it's great for everyone.

on the presentation all that Steve had was that iPhone would be POP3 and IMAP standard compliant, no word about Exchange, thank $divinity

Not having push support for .mac mail would be a deal breaker for me. I switched to .mac when I bought my MBP a year ago now, and I do not want to have to go through the hassle of 1) finding a unused Yahoo address that isn't something like 'nightstorm1284423' and telling everyone my new email address yet again.

I'm really hoping .mac sees some upgrades this year, and this is one of them. Steve mentioned .mac mail in his keynote presentation, but didn't specify if it would support the push functionality. Let's hope he was just overlooking it to give Yahoo some time in the spotlight.

And I think, as often, it comes down to wording.
Steve said Yahoo was the one offering FREE push e-mail.
That doesn't prevent Apple from adding push functionality to their PAY .mac service.

I was also a little let down that there was no talk of .mac in the iPhone reveal. Apple would be foolish to not somehow give it's .mac users some special treatment but then maybe Apple is trying to partner to show that they are open to others being a part of their world and their agreements will make it so that they can't do .mac... who knows, still a while before it comes out.

Not tying .mac into the iPhone would be stupid. Web storage, push email, live blog updates? It's exactly the right combination. Maybe Leopard will bring the integration improvements. (i hope i hope i hope)
