I tried to send an email with mail and it tries to connect with stmp.mac.com, even though I don't even have a .mac account. In my prefrences, I have my right stmp server listed, but it still goes to .mac. I assume that the prefrence file is corrupt. I do make backups and have a back up of when mail was good. Should I just copy the prefrence file over? I did instal a 512mb chip of ram last night and that was the only change to my ibook. Any connection?

Not that I don't want to help people or anything--I love the Mac and I like to share my experiences in hope of helping other people get as much out of their Macs as I do out of mine, but... Sometimes people are a little too quick to ask for help, lay blame, or point fingers. This is an example of one of those cases. "Turn it off then turn it back on" is the default troubleshooting technique for millions of people. The inexperienced users do it because they don't know what else to do and advanced users do it sometimes because it's the right thing to do. It's a good first step when you have a problem and in this case it was the right thing to do.
What I'm saying is at least try to solve the problem before you ask for help. Common sense and help files go a long way. Apple.com/support goes even further. Google will provide the answer to 98% of your problems. These 3 methods will quickly give you an answer in nearly all cases. If that fails, by all means ask for help. It's much less efficient to ask for help right off the bat though. It wastes bandwidth and is slower than looking up the answer. My personal issue is that it is a sign of a lazy person, but that's just the teacher in me talking and since it's summer I'll get off that topic.
