Push notifications from the mail server are completely independent from the downloading of the email message.

Don’t believe me? Try it when on a flight that offers free WiFi messaging (e.g., United). You will still get push mail notifications, but the email app will not be able to connect to the server to download them due to service restrictions. Pay for full WiFi, and the messages are downloaded as expected.

I think most of the people having email issues are actually having connectivity issues, due to either slow or unstable data service, or issues caused by private relay or a VPN. Some say resetting network settings can help fix it. For others, it requires removing a WiFi configuration and setting it up again.

Just because you aren’t having a problem doesn’t mean no one else is. There is definitely an issue with retrieving email as evidenced by the other threads on this topic.

I didn’t say that the problem didn’t exist.

What I said was that connectivity could be part of the issue.

I also pointed out that receiving an email notification is a separate process than the email actually being downloaded by the app. Notifications are an alert that a new message hit the server, not that the email app downloaded a new message. Most average users don’t understand that.

In a perfect world, the email app should be able to pull the message down from the server immediately, but that doesn’t always happen.

This is not new with iOS 18. I always see notifications prior to downloading. I'm using Gmail which is "polled" not push notifications - but if I tap on a notification as soon as it pops up, the app will still be downloading the email.

iCloud mail is push but still i get notifications and the email is not downloaded

The notifications are “pushed” from the server. Not the messages. They get fetched when the client connects to the server.

Why do i remember getting notifications for new emails, entering mail and seeing the emails downloaded? Was this pre iOS18?
