It's only beta 1. Not sure about some assumptions about 13.1 being what gets released after the keynote.I just wanted to say that Mail performance and basic usability is unacceptable. We’re 9 days away from the keynote, so Apple has really outdone itself this time. Pathetic.
Yeah, but ... there are no more (non-Apple) beta testers for 13.0 and that has the same issues. It's only beta 1.

Well, the part about the same issues still being there in the latest iOS 13.0 beta wasn't mentioned as the OP directed this at 13.1 beta 1. (I don't think that 13.1 beta 1 is essentially more or less the equivalent of something like 13.0 beta 9.)
Nothing is changed from 13.0 in 8 betas in Mail to 13.1. I agree with OP its in horrendous shape. Still getting "This message has not been downloaded from the server error" and other basic usability issues with the app
The app is just in really poor shape 9 total betas in, no matter what number you put on it (13.1 vs 13.0); considering they called that "close enough" in 13.0 to release it next week. Really sloppy from Apple this year.
Thanks for all the responses. In my view (and I reiterate, this is my view based on my use of every single beta build released since WWDC), a core system app simply cannot be this broken, it’s unacceptable from a company that’s been supporting this app since 2007. What confounds me, is that this is the Mail app - most users would simply expect this to work, period. End users don’t care about underlying changes, so that simply cannot be an excuse. Finally, iOS 13 hasn’t radically changed the Mail app to warrant such basic usage infractions. Please correct me if I’m fundamentally missing something here. I’m not even getting started on basic connectivity issues that have persisted since beta 1.
One word... beta
More words: New release today and from my early experiences, it seems much improved. 25+ emails and haven't seen any issues on notifications, badges or sorting. And yes, I am using an exchange server
Seems better for me in 13.1 PB2 but still far from perfect. Largest annoyance is when I tap on a notification on my phone's lockscreen I expect to be taken directly to that email. Instead, I get brought to whatever email I had last open. Then I have to go back to my Inbox and find the new message and select that. Hope this gets fixed soon
This! I keep checking with every beta to see if this has been fixed. Its been ongoing now for some time and I have submitted it via that feedback app. It bothers me enough that I have moved to Outlook for the time being
Yes, I understand that and I’m ok with the bugs. I submitted my feedback and moved on to outlook. That's definitely the risk you take when installing a beta. Apple has expressly stated that you should not install any beta on critical devices.
You gotta pay to play.
The question is- how will they fix this in time for next week??That's definitely the risk you take when installing a beta. Apple has expressly stated that you should not install any beta on critical devices.

They didn’t fix the problems since months. I don’t believe that much will change the next weeks. Outlook works a lot better then Apple Mail. The question is- how will they fix this in time for next week??
Agree 100%They didn’t fix the problems since months. I don’t believe that much will change the next weeks. Outlook works a lot better then Apple Mail.
