I am using a .mac account with Mail. My internet service provider is Bell Sympatico, a very large (perhaps the largest) DSL provider in Canada. A while ago I could not send messages, and Sympatico told me it's because you have to use their outgoing server even with other services. So I did and it worked fine.

Now I have a fresh install and like before using the .mac outgoing server didn't work so I tried using the Sympatico one. However when I do it says that the password is wrong (it's right, I checked with the service and made sure caps lock is off). If I set it so it does not ask for identification I just get a message that said the server could not be connect to. Any ideas people? Anyone have simular problems?

Mail problem

Try setting up a new account in Mail with all your settings EXCEPT the SMTP server(don't put an SMTP server in at all)-leave the smtp server blank. When you send mail, it should automatically use your ISP's. This worked for me. If it comes up and asks for your user ID and Password-be sure to put in the user id and password you use for your ISP-not your .Mac account. You can then use the sample Applescript that came with OSX to delete any unneeded SMTP servers.

Actually when I select the server as none it automatically uses the .mac server. Can you tell me how to use the script to delete the outgoing server list?

Hey, I could use that! I was trying to get rid of wrong SMTP Servers in Mail the other day and couldn't figure out how. So where's this AppleScript that "came with OS X"?

SMTP Server Script

The script can be found in /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts. Or you can search for "SMTP" from the Finder. Just run it and select the SMTP servers you want to delete. That should reset it.
