Mail problems

I got a new Mac Mini and now, in Mail, about 15 or so emails keep re-appearing when I search for new messages. I keep deleting and they keep re-appearing. I have quit Mail, restarted the machine, but they continue to appear. I contacted a friend who is much more knowledgeable than me, but his suggestions didn't work. So help is needed.

Are you using POP or IMAP for mail?
Sounds like the re-appearing messages need to be deleted "from the server".

Strangely enough, the problem resolved itself the other day and Mail is working normally.
I am not sure why it corrected itself, but all is right with the world again.
